Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God
Introduction: I was first introduced to this sermon by
Jonathan Edwards in college. Edwards would later become president of Princeton
University. This powerful sermon struck fear in the hearts of its listeners
when delivered in 1741. There are several lessons from this sermon which are
biblically relevant for us to hear. (Adapted from Jay. Brody)
Body
1.
God is all powerful
· Read Psalm 90: 2; Jeremiah 32: 17
· the strongest have no power to resist
him, nor can any deliver out of his hands. He is not only able to cast wicked
men into hell, but he can most easily do it. Matthew 10: 28.
2.
All accountable people sin
· read Romans 3: 23, 10; 3: 12.
· Edwards uses the expression “a
foundation for the torments of hell” & “seeds of Hellfire”.
· First John 1: 8, “if we say we have
no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
· Our world today by and large does not
realize how terrible sin really is.
3.
Hell is real
· a blazing furnace- Matthew 13: 50
· gnashing of teeth- matthew 13: 42
· prepared for the devil and his
angels- Matthew 25: 41
· fiery lake of burning sulphur-
revelation 19: 20
· companions - revelation 21: 8
· Edwards “the wrath of God burns
against them, their damnation does not slumber; The pit is prepared, the fire
is made ready, the furnace is now lit, ready to receive them; The flames do now
rage and glow” Edwards wanted the people
to know what they were facing.
4.
Satan is actively striving to lure people
· the devil stands ready to fall upon
them and seize them as his own. “Edwards”
· first Peter 5: 8
· revelation 12: 7-12
· Satan is alive and well and active
5.
Only God's mercy saves us from this horror.
· Edwards stresses that sinners deserve
their fate, which is hell. Edwards quotes “the sword of divine justice is every
moment brandished over their heads, and it is nothing but the hand of mercy
that holds it back.”
· Romans 6: 23, “ the wages of sin is
death.”
· There is nothing we can do on our own
to stop this.. Only God's wonderful
mercy can save us from this eternal punishment
· lamentations 3: 22-23
· Titus 3: 5
· first Peter 1: 3
6.
Time is short, so don't delay.
· Edwards-“it is no security to wicked
men for one moment, that there are no visible means of death at hand.”
· Reminds us of the critical importance
of obeying the gospel now before it is too late period Matthew 24: 37-44
7.
The only way to escape hell is faith and obedience.
· Edwards- “almost every natural man
that hears of hell, flatters himself that he shall escape it; He depends upon himself
for his own security; He flatters himself in what he has done, in what he is
now doing, or what he intends to do.”
· We can never be “good enough” to earn
our way into heaven. We can never do enough good works to deserve salvation.
Ephesians 2: 8-9, Romans 9: 16.
